Guidelines for a Reiki Treatment

When giving Reiki be aware of your guidance and your client. Above all else, follow your inner intuition and trust that the Reiki energy knows where to go and what to do. You cannot harm anyone.

It is important to learn to not be attached to results. Do not try and force the energy or concentrate on channelling Reiki. Instead, turn the healing over to the universe. Reiki energy can also work at one to two inches above the body.

The more centred and comfortable you are the more effectively you will channel Reiki energy. Therapists often put the clients’ comfort ahead of their own. If we don’t take care of ourselves we will not be optimal channels.

  • Make sure you are comfortable and not strained
  • If you are standing, keep your knees slightly bent to facilitate better energy flow
  • Be aware of your breathing – take relaxed, deep breathes while channelling Reiki

As a Reiki practitioner, it is important for you to stay aware of your client’s comfort. I recommend that you use the following guidelines to support your client:-

  • Check your body hygiene…do you need to use deodorant or to brush your teeth. Be aware that strong smelling perfume or aftershave can make people feel sick.
  • Create a safe – quiet – caring – comfortable environment, soothing – anti-frantic music is recommended.
  • A minimum of three consecutive daily Reiki treatments is recommended when you treat another person for the first time.
  • Keep a box of tissues available for your client. Wash your hands before and after a Reiki treatment or even sanitise.
  • Suggest your client takes off their shoes, glasses and loosens their clothes if required.
  • Both your legs and your client’s legs should be uncrossed.
  • Make sure your client is warm and comfortable either on a chair or a treatment table. You should keep a blanket handy and place pillows under the person’s knees to support their lower back.
  • Explain what you are planning to do.
  • Seek permission for placing your hands on a client, if you do not you are in danger of being accused of assault.
  • Place your hands on your client slowly and gently and remove them in the same way.
  • Keep your fingers together.
  • When your hands are over the client’s eyes be careful not to press on their eyelids or against their nostrils.
  • When working on a client’s head, be conscious to not breathe on their face. Turn your head away slightly to breathe.
  • When working on a client’s neck take care not to let the weight of your hands rest on their throat.
  • Do not lean on your client.
  • Do not try and force the energy or allow your ego to get in the way of the natural flow.
  • Unless you are a GP or otherwise properly licensed, do not diagnose or prescribe medications and/ or vitamins.
  • Give the full Reiki treatment except in emergencies, accidents and on the spot stress reduction. Use/treat as needed.
