Suicide and The Law

  • Suicide is the act of intentionally taking your own life.
  • Usually it’s said that someone has committed suicide.
  • The use of the word “commit” is linked to a crime taking place. Suicide was decriminalised in the UK in 1961. Aiding or Abetting Suicide is illegal.

Online Safety Act 2023

Ofcom are responsible for ensuring companies that run social media platforms or search engines must promote online safety.

Companies now need to prevent, detect and remove illegal content, including material depicting, promoting or facilitating suicide.
